Savings Jar + Altitude Summit

I feel like practically every time a blogging conference rolls around I start wishing I were there. This happens especially when The Altitude Summit (aka Alt) happens.

I’d already decided to set aside coins and some cash for a special treat as one of my goals for the year. But the more I thought about it, the more I decided that I was going to save up for Alt Summit in Salt Lake City in 2014.

Savings Jar - So Far

Savings Jar – So Far

I know I’m going to need to step up my savings game, but I found this great idea from The Full Moxie that I’m going to implement. Basically, you start the 1st week in the year by putting $1 in the jar. The following week, $2. Then so on and so forth until the end of the year, always putting in as much money as it is the week in the year. If you go to The Full Moxie website, in the link I just referenced, she’s even included a printable!

I ended up spending money, but I found this large decorative jar at Target and I’m going to use it to save for Alt!

I’ve loved reading all of the recaps of Alt. I was stalking the #altsummit hashtag on instagram and twitter the entire weekend that it was happening.. And I loved this map where all of the attendees placed their business cards.

I am so proud of this little state where I live. I really want to go and put Maine bloggers on the map!

P.S. Have you ever been to Alt Summit? Are you going to go next year? What’s your method for saving?

Coffee Date + February Goals

If we sat down for coffee, I’d probably ask you how you are doing with your goals and resolutions for the year. I’d probably not be actually drinking coffee (since the caffeine gives me migraines) but drinking soymilk with coffee flavored syrup. I’d tell you that since starting to drink my little soymilk + coffee syrup concoctions, I’ve been going through soymilk like crazy.

I’d ask how things are going in your life. Things at work are going awesome, the kids in my class are doing really well with goals we’ve been setting about sitting on the potty. We are doing lots of fun art projects, and this weekend I get to make invites to our class Valentine’s day party.

I’d tell you that some of my goals/resolutions for the year are going better than others… but overall, that I’m very happy with how things are going!

I’d tell you that I’ve decided what I’m going to put the coins and change that I’m saving up towards. I’m going to try like heck to go to Alt Summit in Salt Lake City in January of next year. I always get jealous of all the pictures and info that comes out of Alt Summit each year. This year they even had a “beginner” track geared towards people like me with little blogs. I have a wonderful post planned for middle of next week about my savings jar.

I’d tell you that as far as my goals of getting more exercise hasn’t happened yet… but will be soon! I’d tell you about Derby Lite. It’s a roller skating fun + fitness class using some of the skills drills common in Roller Derby! I’m registered for a class that starts later this month not far from where I work, so I’m very excited.

I’d tell you that I’m doing well with saving my coins and such, and that I have re-opened my etsy shop… but my goal to curb my spending hasn’t been going that well. Between my Derby Lite stuff, and some stuff I bought at Target, budgeting hasn’t gone well… but I’m hoping to change that right around.

February Specific Goals

  • Have a blast at Derby Lite and meet new people!
  • Get my budget under control.
  • Enjoy all the fun and excitement going on at work and in my classroom.
  • Continue to be creative and work on knitting/making jewelry/ect.

December Goals Check In + 2012 Review + Goals for 2013

First off, let’s check in with how I’m doing with my December goals.

  1. Drink More Water. [I didn’t do well with this at all. But I got an awesome water bottle called the Aquazinger for Christmas that infuses the water with fresh fruit and has definitely upped my water intake!]
  2. Blog 21 times! [I blogged 12 times. Definitely did better with blogging than I have in previous months, but I definitely didn’t officially hit this goal.]
  3. Do dinner/lunch/coffee with friends at least once a week.  [I did great with this goal! Went to a few Christmas parties, spent some time visiting with some friends. Although I did cancel on some friends a few times, I did do better with spending time with others!]
  4. Read 2 Books. [Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos was the only book I ended up reading this month. So I only halfway reached this goal.]
  5. Complete at least two of the DIY/Craft projects on my to-make list. [Did terrible with that.]
  6. Email someone I admire once a week. [I also didn’t do well with this either.]

2012 in Review

I started off January being unemployed… but only a few weeks into the new year I got 2 Part-Time jobs, both in childcare that I loved. Spent a lot of time working. Worked on my birthday, which I wasn’t feeling well for, so it definitely didn’t nearly come close to being as awesome as my 23rd birthday.

The biggest thing that happened to me (besides being employed) was a family trip to Australia for a week and a half when my dad had to go for work. It was my first trip I’ve needed to go through customs, and what I consider to be my first trip out of the country. (When you live in Maine so close to the Canadian border, and you never needed a passport to go there, it doesn’t really count.) It was amazing and we had a great time.

Spent quality time with family and friends, spending some time up in Belgrade Lakes. We did some updates in our kitchen, which looks a million times better than it did before. In late August I gave my 2 weeks notice to my part time jobs and took a full time Assistant Toddler Teacher job working alongside my cousin. It came with benefits and a wonderful group of kids, parents, and co-workers. I had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we lived through many days this year where we were told that the world was going to end. For Christmas I got quite a bit of fun items, and a lot of gifts and yummy food from the families where I work. I also got a couple scratch tickets, one of which gave me $100 in winnings!

Goals for 2013

Be Healthy:

  • Drink More Water
  • Exercise
  • Eat Better

With my new water bottle, I’m hoping that will help with my water intake. I rarely exercise, unless you consider my work with chasing toddlers exercise. I’m also hoping that I can eat better and just be more aware of how much junk food I’m eating.

  • Visit Eileen in Alaska
  • Plan a 2014 trip to Africa

I haven’t seen Eileen since her wedding in 2011. I definitely need to make a trip up to visit her happen this year! I also want to go to Africa. It’s weighing heavily on my heart. I want to do some proactive work in planning, like figuring out where I’ll go and contacting organizations to work with, and learning some key phrases in a new language.

Take Care of Finances:

  • Participate in The Spending Fast
  • Pay down $12,000 in student loan debt
  • Increase income by running a side business
  • Put my entire tax refund check into a Rainy Day Fund
  • Save coins & $5 savings plan for a special treat

I really hope that my finances are an area in my life where I can make a huge impact in 2013. I hope to pay down $12,000 in my student loan debt. I hope to do some saving by participating in The Spending Fast (with a few exceptions here and there) and by putting my coins and all $5 I get in a piggy bank so that I can save up for a special treat, like a new phone or a DSLR. I want to put my entire tax refund into savings for something like a Travel Fund or to save up to move out of my parents house. I also want to either re-open and do a lot to grow cool & pretty things shop, or do some other side business.

Make Time for Friends:

  • Remember Birthdays
  • Show Up
  • Respond in a timely fashion

I want to be better with my relationships with others. I want to give people birthday cards for their birthdays instead of just a message on facebook. I want to stop canceling plans with people and really just show up (and give them my undivided attention, putting the phone away). I also need to be better at responding to text messages in a timely matter.

Hobbies and Crafts:

  • Learn to knit
  • Learn to crochet
  • Work on my sewing abilities
  • Make some jewelry
  • Finishing cheerleading scrapbook
  • Start travel scrapbook
  • Finish recipe book
  • Read 26 books

I want to learn to knit  or crochet, or maybe both. I really want to do some more sewing since I haven’t really sewed a lot and I would love to work up to where I can make myself some things from different patterns. I want to make some jewelry and work on just generally being more crafty. I also want to re-teach myself to do cross-stitch/needlepoint.

I want to finish my cheerleading scrapbook, since it’s the closest to being finished. I want to start on my travel scrapbook. I also want to finish making my little recipe book. I also would like to read 26 books.

I am hoping that 2013 is my year! I’ll turn 25 and I have big plans for this year!

December Goals – Mid-Month Check In

  1. Drink More Water. [I’m doing terrible at this.]
  2. Blog 21 times! [This will be my 10th post this month & I already have 1 scheduled for next week. Only 10 more to make this goal!]
  3. Do dinner/lunch/coffee with friends at least once a week.  [I’m doing great with this goal! I’ve already been to a Christmas party and have plans for one for next week.]
  4. Read 2 Books. [I read Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos… and although I’ve started a few other books, I really haven’t had the drive to finish them… so I need to finish one!]
  5. Complete at least two of the DIY/Craft projects on my to-make list. [Haven’t done this yet.]
  6. Email someone I admire once a week. [Not doing well on this one either.]

All in all, I think I’m doing okay with my goals. Some are going a little better than others, and I still have time in the month to make the rest happen!

December Goals

  1. Drink More Water. {anyone who knows me knows I don’t like the taste of water and therefore don’t drink as much water as I should. So I’m trying to drink the amount of water my toddlers drink each day while I’m at work.. since I’m a grownup, and I should be a better role model of drinking healthy drinks!}
  2. Blog 21 times! {I know if I plan and schedule them over the weekend I am sure I can meet this goal! But we will see. Some months I’m way better at blogging than others.
  3. Do dinner/lunch/coffee with friends at least once a week. {I need to be better at socializing on the weekends! I usually spend most of my weekends relaxing. (Which isn’t a bad thing.)}
  4. Read 2 Books. {I should be able to do this during naptime for the kids I work with… I have a huge to-read list, so I’m sure this won’t be difficult!}
  5. Complete at least two of the DIY/Craft projects on my to-make list. {I want to make a glittery starbucks tumbler, and maybe I’ll make some sort of jewelry!}
  6. Email someone I admire once a week. {I need to work on making those connections with other bloggers I admire!}

November Goals

  1. Drink water every day. {anyone who knows me knows I don’t like the taste of water and therefore don’t drink as much water as I should. So I’m trying to drink the amount of water my toddlers drink each day while I’m at work.. since I’m a grownup, and I should be a better role model of drinking healthy drinks!}
  2. Blog 45 times. {I’m sure this is a lofty goal. But between 30 days of posting what I’m thankful for, I should be able to also post 15 other times about other things!}
  3. Buy half of the Christmas presents I need to buy. {So I can spread out how much money I’m spending and not buy everything at once.}
  4. Do at least 2 projects from my DIY bookmark folder.
  5. Start on my new desk project.

Goodbye June!

Let’s check out how I did with my June goals!

  • Blog 25 times in June. {20 posts. Which is almost there. I’d say out of all my goals, this has been one of the most successful.}
  • Read 3 Books. {I recently started reading The Atlas of Love by Laurie Frankel. I’m about halfway done. Didn’t do well on this goal at all. I need to get audio books I can listen to while driving to work (since I spend about 10 hours a week in my car on average).}
  • Plan an epic party or two. {I wanted to help if my sister had a grad party and host a surprise party for a few friends, but neither party ended up happening, so no party planning over here.}
  • Do dinner/lunch/coffee with friends at least once a week. {Yes! Totally done well with this! I’ve been very busy! I actually did a lunch/coffee date with a few of my girlfriends from high school yesterday, and we were at Tim Hortons for like 3 hours!}
  • Complete at least two of the DIY/Craft projects on my to-make list. {Haven’t done this either.}
  • Organize my room and desk space so I can better utilize it! {Got started on this right after I decided to make it one of my monthly goals! I’m hoping to make some more headway on this goal soon!}

I blame the fact that I didn’t do as well as I had hoped on the fact that after school got out, I got more hours at work. And I had 4 nights of training where I didn’t get home until 7-8PM. Hopefully July will be better!
